My name is Maja (pronounced “My-ah”) and I’m the person behind It’s Not Real Art.
I’m a Polish-born, London-based maker. I like odd, unconventional ideas, and going for something that makes me think “yeah, that sort of makes sense if you look at it that way.” I like to take the term “maximalist” and push it a step further.
My background is in theatre, where I work behind the scenes as a stage manager. Drawing is my way of doing something completely different - no cue sheets, no headsets, no show reports.
I’ve always loved sketching and painting but lost the drive with the arrival of adulthood. I started drawing again 3 years ago while working on a cruise, and finding myself with nothing to do over endless afternoons at sea. I started with an idea for a quirky deck of tarot cards, a few POSCA pens, and regular refills of hot chocolate. I like working on collections - whether it’s tarot, zodiac, artists, musicians or directors, I am a completionist.
Everything is designed by me & printed in small batches in London.
My mum said it’s not real art but I guess I draw these anyway.
